A Book of Achievement

A Word About Jersey City's Low Tax Rate
Low Debt and Low Cost Of Governance

This Web version:
COPYRIGHT 2003, GET NJ

Notwithstanding some impressions to the contrary, the fact is that Jersey City has one of the lowest tax rates in the State, and a very clear idea of the able manner in which the finances of the City have been conducted under Commission Government can be seen by a comparison between Newark and Jersey City. Newark is one of the best governed cities in the State, and its credit is of the highest. Nevertheless, Jersey City has a lower tax rate, a lower net funded debt, a lower tax levy per capita. The following table will be found very instructive:

1920
Tax Rate
Jersey City $30.97 per thousand
Newark 37.50 per thousand
Cost of Government
Jersey City $38.50 per capita
Newark 44.00 per capita
Assessed Valuations
Jersey City $369,842,278
Newark 485,219,397
Population
Jersey City 298,103
Newark 414,206
Net Funded Debt
Jersey City $37.40 per capita
Newark 81.10 per capita
Tax Rate 1921
Jersey City, $29.16
