EW citizens realize that one of Jersey City's greatest assets is the complete absence of the forms of vice which are usually found in a large city. Morally Jersey City, due to the efforts of its Board of Commissioners, is today one of the cleanest cities in the United States. Visitors are loud in their praise of the city in this respect. There are no disorderly houses; women can walk with safety on our public streets after dark. There are no gambling resorts. Early in its first administration the Board of Commissioners caused to be suppressed back rooms of saloons where women and girls were permitted to assemble and who were served with drinks. Cheap dance halls were closed, as also were public halls with saloon attachments, where alleged wedding receptions were held.
