1921: Jersey City Under Commission Government
A Book of Achievement

New Vehicular Tube

This Web version:
COPYRIGHT 2003, GET NJ

HE construction of a new tube for vehicular traffic between New York and Jersey City has already commenced. This will be Due of the greatest engineering feats in the history of the world. It will cost an enormous sum of money, but the facilities afforded will abundantly justify the expenditure.

The effect of this tunnel upon Jersey City will be literally a revolution. It will make us nearer to the lower business and manufacturing center of New York than the larger part of the area of New York City itself. The enormous rents charged for business space in New York when this tube is opened will bring to our city great numbers of small and large manufacturing and mercantile businesses, seeking to take advantage of our comparatively cheaper land and facilities. This in turn will bring a tremendous number of employers and employes and of those interested in these enterprises to our city, and houses must be provided. This will mean an enormous demand for land and for business connected with building for many years.

New Streets Necessary.

The Commissioners believe that the way to prepare our city for the coming of this tremendous improvement is to lay out certain streets from the end of the tunnel to the downtown section and to the uptown section, and to improve these streets with the most modern pavement strong enough to stand the heaviest traffic. These streets should afford easy communication with the freight stations of the railroads having their termini in Jersey City and Hoboken. These streets, with the modern gas engine truck, will enable the cheap shipping from factory to freight station of goods manufactured, and the cheap transportation from station to factory of the raw materials.

The accompanying map shows the location of this vehicular tunnel and the streets and a proposed plan to improve to meet the conditions which the construction of this great improvement will create in Jersey City.
