Mayor Bret Schundler hosted a press conference on May 26th, 1998 at 1:00 PM in Liberty State Park to announce the Supreme Court decision granting to the state of New Jersey sovereign authority over most of Ellis Island.

An elated Mayor Schundler said: "This Supreme Court decision rights a centuries-old historic wrong. This is a final blow to New York state's unjust land grab dating back to the colonial era. It is a victory for all New Jersey residents and I would like to thank Governor Whitman for all of her help. Some have called this a battle over bragging rights, but New Jersey residents know that sometimes bragging rights are worth fighting for. The Supreme Court has finally recognized that America's Golden Door truly resides in Jersey City."

The Supreme Court voted by a 6 to 3 margin that the 24.5 acres of Ellis Island that were created from landfill since 1891 belong to New Jersey. Nearly 13 million immigrants came through Ellis Island's facilities from the 1890s until 1954, when the center was closed.
