Haz-Mat Incident at 300 Rt. 440

On September 8, 1996, at 0837 hrs., companies responded to an industrial accident reported at 300 Rt. 440, Langer Transport, which was a chemical transportation trucking company. Engine Company 19 arrived on the scene at 0840 hrs. Cleaning agents containing acid were accidentally mixed with water and caused an exothermic reaction. Two workers were injured when the chemicals exploded on them. When the JCFD Hazardous Materials Unit arrived on the scene, the chemicals were located, identified, stabilized and separated. A total of 14 people were injured and treated. The incident was terminated at 1358 hrs.
