The Boss
TURNING HOSPITAL BEDS INTO VOTES: SOCIALIZED MEDICINE UNDER THE HAGUE MACHINE

By David Dayton McKean
This Web version, edited by GET NJ, COPYRIGHT 2003

The idea which, years ago, grew in Mayor Hague's mind until he felt it his duty to share it with all of Hudson County has now grown so great that the taxpayers can hardly carry it with all the other burdens that they have. One hospital bed for every two hundred and fifty persons in the population is regarded as adequate; but there is now one for every one hundred and thirty-five in Hudson County. The area is so much oversupplied with hospital facilities that on many days there are more employees than patients. If the finances of the city and county collapse, as they may do at any time, the Mayor may well seek to share his idea with the state of New Jersey. Failing that, he may have to share it with the federal government, the owner of the principal mortgage.
