The Boss

By David Dayton McKean

Any criticism of the Jersey City police, either as to its size, its costs, or its lawless methods, is answered by the retort that the police keep Jersey City `clean,' that is, moral. There are indeed certain offenses that the police do see; and it must be said that in view of the nature of its population and its sea-borne commerce, Jersey City might have been an Amercan Port Said or Shanghai. There is no red-light district in Jersey City, and there has been none as long as Frank Hague has been mayor. No one has ever charged him with tolerating any commercialized vice in his city.

There are no burlesque shows in Jersey City, though they flourish just over the city line in Union City, which is dominated Hudson County. There are no taxi dance halls in Jersey by the same political organization that governs all of City, although again there are plenty just over the city lines. The Mayor has announced that there will be no cabarets, no night clubs; as recently as January, 1940, when he rejected the petitions of hall owners for dine-dance permits, the local papers printed columns of applause by Catholic priests and Protestant ministers. `The city is fortunate,' said one preacher, `in having such a mayor when it comes to more issues.' Those citizens who would not agree with this sentiment have only to drive north a mile or two, for the Mayor's puritanism, unlike his organization, does not embrace all of Hudson County.
