The Boss

Gambling in Jersey City, however, is neither an offense not a sin. There is a large sign outside Saint Aeden's Church where Mayor Hague goes to Mass when he is in town: `Bingo Every Friday Night. Saint Aeden's Auditorium. Admission 40.' The casual driver going through the city will see signs in front of churches such as this: `Masses for the Souls in Purgatory, Tuesdays at 9 A.m. Bingo every Saturday Night.' The Dominican Bulletin of the Sacred Heart Church, Bayview and Jackson Avenues, in a recent issue had a banner headline: `GRAND PRIZE At The Bingo Thursday Night $100 GIVEN AWAY.' Several of the Democratic ward clubs have bingo parties regularly; at the most impressive one of these a one-dollar admission fee is charged, and $7500 in cash prizes is given away in one night.
