Most of the winter is usually spent in Florida, either at
Palm Beach or Miami Beach, where he rents a villa for the
season. Whenever the public business requires his personal
attention in Jersey City he returns briefly. With the end of
the winter season the Hagues return to Jersey City; they have
a fourteen-room duplex apartment said to have a rental
value of seven thousand dollars a year in the Duncan Apartments
(owned in whole or in part by the Mayor) at Hudson
Boulevard and Duncan Avenue, which is in the fashionable
Bergen Hill section of Jersey City an island of respectability
in a sea of slums.
In May or June the summer home at Deal, New Jersey,
what is called the millionaires' colony, is opened; but
neither the Mayor nor Mrs. Hague ordinarily spends the
whole summer there. The monotony of summer-colony life is usually broken up by a trip to Europe, to Hawaii, or to
California. Deal is within easy commuting distance of Jersey City
In the autumn the family moves back to the Duncan,
though the Mayor has sometimes had an apartment in a
New York hotel, the Plaza or the Waldorf Astoria. After
the fall election - New Jersey has annual elections - they
take a place in Florida again. This is the life led by the man
who began in the slums of the Horseshoe Section.
