The Boss

By David Dayton McKean
This Web version, edited by GET NJ, COPYRIGHT 2003

Some men, denied an education in youth or negligent of educational opportunities, have in later life made up for their deficiencies by wide reading and study. The only reference in any of his speeches or statements that would indicate that Mayor Hague has read a book since he left old Public School 21 is an extensive quotation in one of them from Mrs. Dilling's The Red Network. The paucity of his general information is so well known to all his intimates that they do what they can to protect him from embarrassment; Dean Spaulding Frazer, the opposing counsel, said when he was testifying in the C.I.O. case in Newark, for instance, that he would summarize the Mayor's testimony in a 'simple syllogism,' to which Mr. John B. Matthews (Mayor Hague's counsel) objected, `unless he explains to the Mayor what a syllogism is.' (Hague v. Committee for Industrial Organization, Transcript of Testimony, p. 1150, hereafter cited as Transcript.)
