The Boss
BIPARTISAN OPERATIONS

By David Dayton McKean
This Web version, edited by GET NJ, COPYRIGHT 2003

The Republican state platform in 1938 viewed with alarm the decline of representative government in Washington and pledged the party to `fight in Congress to restore our government to the people and for the perpetuation of representative government as against the centralization of power in the hands of any one individual.' Whatever else may be thought of this plank, it must be conceded that the Republicans in New Jersey speak from experience – they know all about the centralization of power in the hands of one individual – for Mayor Hague, if he elects a Democratic governor, controls one party, but if he fails he can still get along reasonably well with a Republican governor. He has never been able to elect a legislature Democratic in both houses, but he has proved that his political astuteness is sufficient to obtain most of what he wants from a Republican legislature. The two-party system in New Jersey may be said, therefore, to be suspended.
