The Boss

By David Dayton McKean
This Web version, edited by GET NJ, COPYRIGHT 2003

Frank Hague has sometimes been called `The Hudson County Hitler,' perhaps because of the alliterative quality of the phrase; but if any comparison with a European dictator is to be made the best would be with Franco, for both have had the support of the Catholic Church. No political leader could survive in Jersey City, in view of the seventy-five per cent Catholic majority, without it; and if the hierarchy should decide that Hague had gone too far he could not survive the next election. When he is defeated, dies, or retires, his successor must be a man acceptable to this, the most influential group in the community. The attitude of the organization toward all non-political associations in the community is strikingly like that of Franco and Mussolini: it will make terms with the Church; but, if it can, it will take over other organizations, or break them up.
