Even more significant was his official acknowledgement as ward leader. This not only boosted his image in the eyes of his followers in his own ward, but made his a force to be reckoned with in the estimation of other city leaders. It meant that Davis would come to Hague for suggestions on patronage appointments. Job seekers in the ward would have to win Hague’s support before being considered for city jobs.

To this point, Hague’s rise to prominence in the Democratic council had been rapid and largely uninterrupted.
