Saint Peter's College Michaelmas Convocation

Dreams are important to Dr. King. He was dreaming when his wife, Coretta, called the hospital where he was resting to tell him that he had just won the Nobel Peace Prize. Some of his dreams must have been shattered when he realized that in the six days of violence, uncontrolled, in the area of Los Angeles, even among the intelligent writers there would be made the charge of responsibility and the guilt would be placed upon his shoulders. His dreams must have been shattered when he reflected on the shortness of human memory, that amid the meaningless violence of Los Angeles, the meaningless violence exercised on the Negro would be forgotten. Recall his words from the Birmingham city jail which, while never justifying the violence of Los Angeles, might at least serve to temper some of the simpliste criticism:

When you have seen hate-filled persons curse, kick, brutalize and even kill your black brothers and sisters with impunity ... when you are harried by day and haunted at night by the fact that you are a Negro, plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; when you are forever fighting a degenerating sense of "nobodiness" - then you will understand why we find it difficult to wait.
Birmingham is not Los Angeles but Dr. King's dreams must have been shattered when he dared to think that he had the support of the whole Church of Christ and some of its most distinguished members turned away.

Yes, Dr. King is a dreamer but we want him to know that he has no monopoly on dreams, that there is an equal right to dreams and that Saint Peter's has through two and one-half years been dreaming that Dr. King would stand on our stage and accept from us this honor which the President of Saint Peter's College will confer on him now - The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws and Letters.
