Jersey City
In a speech tonight, Friday September 11, 1998, before the Cape May County
Republican Organization, Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler will call on President
Bill Clinton to resign from office. He will be the first New Jersey Republican
to call for the President's resignation.
Mayor Schundler said: "Bill Clinton must step down as President of the United States. The issue is not one of forgiveness. Instead, the pertinent question is: Is Bill Clinton fit to be President of the United States? It is apparent that the answer is no.
"The single most important criterion of fitness for the presidency is that a President must be committed to the good of the people--even to the point of self-sacrifice, if necessary. This President has shown that he does not care about the people, but instead is an utterly selfish human being who engaged in repeated sexual encounters with an employee during work hours in the Oval Office.
"How can he not have known that this would become public? How can he have had such little concern for the impact that this would have on his ability to govern? How can he have had so little regard for the people?"
