Mayor | July 10, 2000 |
Jersey City
On Tuesday, July 11, 2000, Mayor Bret Schundler and the grassroots group
Citizens Against Tolls will hold a public meeting to discuss the traffic, wasted fuel, pollution, and costs associated with the Garden State Parkway Toll system. The rally will serve as the launching pad for a statewide effort to remove the Parkway tolls.
"We have calculated that it costs 13 cents for each 35-cent toll collected, which equals $65 million annually," said Ray Neveil, founder of Citizens Against Tolls. "Toll collecting requires a force of 800 people, including 12 executives at salaries well over $100,000. There has to be a better way."
"Motorists who use the Garden State Parkway are frustrated with the inefficient toll collection system. It causes severe traffic congestion, wasted fuel, pollution, accidents, and lost time," said Mayor Schundler. "I look forward to working with Citizens Against Tolls to send Trenton the message that it's time to enter the 21st Century and tear down the tolls."
