Sponsored by the Jersey City People-Police Partnership, "Operation Kids" Child Fingerprint Program was recently initiated in Jersey City schools with the assistance of the Police Department and the Board of Education. A press conference will be held on Tuesday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Public School # 5 to introduce this program to the citizens of Jersey City.
The four-year old People-Police Partnership, under the co-chairmanship of Gloria Esposito and Dominick D'Agosto, supplied the fingerprint kits. Police officers distributed the kits to the public and parochial schools for the students to take home. For the second consecutive year, The Lynn Schundler Foundation for Charities donated $3,000 toward the fingerprint kit fund.
The free, disposable fingerprint kits address the serious increase of missing and exploited children. The kits show parents how to take their children's fingerprints and instruct parents on what data to record and save for future reference. The parents retain possession of the fingerprints and related date unless needed by the police in an emergency.
"This is a program that every parent or guardian of a school age child should welcome. However remote the chances are that the information recorded will ever be needed by the police, the fast that it would be available if called for is reason enough for filing the data now. I am grateful to everyone involved in this program, especially to parents who respond to the requests of the "Operation Kids" sponsors," said Mayor Bret Schundler.
