Mayor Schundler Addresses the Grand Kites Festival for Peace and Harmony
A Millennium Cultural Event

Jersey City
On Tuesday, August 15, 2000, at 10:30 a.m., Mayor Bret Schundler of Jersey City and the Korean community will celebrate the Grand Kite Festival and the 55th anniversary of the Korean Independence Day for Peace and Harmony. This millennium cultural event will showcase Korea's rich cultural background through the flying of 2,000 Kites over the Hudson River.

Other speakers will include Korean Ambassador, Mr. Ho; Korean Association President, Mr. Lee; Representing the Korean Seniors Association of New York and New Jersey, Mr. Ha; and President of Princeton Undergraduate Student Government, Mr. Kim.

Mayor Schundler stated, "I take great joy in commemorating the rich ethnic diversity found in Jersey City and abroad. The Korean culture has offered our communities so much in terms of family values and cultural richness. Jersey City, being home to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, is proud to hold this celebration of Korean heritage."

The flying of kites has over 1,300 years of history in Korea as one of the most widely favored year-around activities for all ages. Flying kites is one way Koreans express their hopes and dreams through writing or drawing their ambitions on the face of the kites.
