Mayor | June 30, 2000 |
Jersey City
Mayor Bret Schundler will be hosting a press conference at 4:00 pm today with Jersey City families to renew his appeal to New York City and Macy's to amend their plans for OpSail 2000's 4th of July fireworks display so that New Jerseyans can fully enjoy the show.
“Parents from throughout the State of New Jersey will be bringing their children to Liberty State Park on July 4th to enjoy the tall ship parade and OpSail festivities. It would be a tragedy if these children didn't get a chance to see fireworks on the 4th of July. Liberty State Park is supposed to be New Jersey's official headquarters for OpSail 2000. What good is that designation if you can't see fireworks,” Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler said.
Responding to recent comments by Mayor Giuliani and New York City Fire Department officials which suggested that the fireworks display could not be moved because of safety concerns, Schundler will make the following points:
“If New York City is worried about maintaining emergency access roads open on Manhattan's West Side, then Macy's should position a fireworks barge directly off Liberty Sate Park so that it is a full 2 miles away from Manhattan and won't attract New York City spectators. The other 11 fireworks barges are stationed along New York's coast, mostly in the East River. It wouldn't be a big deal to have 1 barge moored on the New Jersey side so that our kids could can see the show too.”
Schundler will also make a special plea to Macy's, which is currently in negotiations with Newport Mall in Jersey City to construct a new 180,000 sq. ft. flagship store, to amend their fireworks display:
“I am pleased to welcome Macy's to Jersey City. I just want them to insist that New York give consideration to New Jersey's children. They should be able to enjoy Macy's fireworks. After all, New Jersey parents shop at Macy's throughout the Garden State.”
Schundler said that he will continue to lobby for a change to the fireworks display right up until July 4th,
“I'm not asking New York City and Macy's to move mountains, I'm just asking them to move one fireworks barge to be reasonable and fair.”
