Mayor Bret Schundler will present the Summer Reading Club Trophy to the students of Saints John and Ann Interparochial School on Monday, October 2 at 8:00 am in the auditorium. The trophy is being awarded to the school with the largest percentage of students in the 2000 Summer Reading Club.
Citywide, the participation in the Summer Reading Club increased by 58% this summer over last year as a result of a community awareness program and a new approach to children's services recommended by the Jersey City Library Board of Trustees' management consultant, LSSI.
Last summer, over 640 children participated in the eight-week reading club. Over 450 of these readers and members of their family participated in the end of the year picnic at Camp Liberty. LSSI purchased a large, handsome trophy that can be used for fifteen years and took it into the schools to promote the 2000 Club's Keepin' The Beat With Books theme.
