Mayor | March 24, 2000 |
Jersey City
On Monday, March 27 at 11:00 a.m., Mayor Bret Schundler will unveil a painting "Exchange Place at the Turn of the Century" in the lobby of 10 Exchange Place. The painting, executed in oil on canvas, depicts the Jersey City waterfront at Exchange Place in the early 1900's. At the time, the Pennsylvania Railroad Terminal and the ferry slips connecting it to Manhattan were still in operation. The painting is based on photographs and postcards of that era.
"John Coburn is a gifted and highly talented artist who has captured the very essence of Jersey City at the turn of the century. His painting literally takes us back in time and depicts what life on the waterfront was like in the 1900's. On behalf of the residents of Jersey City, I thank him for gracing us with his extraordinary talent," said Mayor Bret Schundler.
John Coburn studied art in Paris and New York. His work has been shown in exhibitions in New York City.
