A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Jersey City's Van Vorst Park Historic District
A Walking Tour of Architectural Styles
20. 446 Jersey Avenue

By Herbert J. Githens

DIRECTION: Turn left (south) on Jersey Avenue, staying on the left (east) side of the street. Midway in this block is a fine Queen-Anne-style brick-house.

Queen Anne asymmetry and the use of many fine materials set this house off from its neighbors. Notice the fine face brick with narrow joints. Molded brick shapes are used in the arches. A slate roof, stone and wood details, and excellent terra cotta details such as the gable top are of interest. The use of both sandstone and limestone on upper floor details and the stoop, respectively, acknowledge the favorable characteristics of each stone. The ironwork is unique to the house. It was built after 1887.
