DIRECTION: Continue south along Grove Street. Notice the
cornices on 297 and 295 Grove. Turn right (west)
on Mercer Street. Walk on the right side of the
street.
These are similar side-by-side townhouses three bays
wide and three stories high over a basement. The ironwork
is particularly fine here. Notice the flower motif on the
sidewalk fence at 48 Mercer. This is an anthemion flower
used frequently in Greek Revival architecture. The basket
newel post has balled finials at its center. Boot scrapers
complete this arrangement. Both houses have recessed entrances
with sidelights and transoms. The enframement treatment is
very delicate. Simple horizontal drip molds cap the lintels
over the window openings at 50 Mercer.
